5 Steps to Spiritual Wellness

 1.   Acknowledge the need for a relationship with your Heavenly Father.

We were created to be in a relationship with God.  That relationship was broken by our sin, and whether we are aware of it or not, we’ve been trying to make ourselves “right” again by any number of ways.  Some people look to relationships with the opposite sex to cover that rejection they feel deep down, others turn to physical beauty to mask the inner deformity, some try to cover the poverty in our   spirits with material wealth to make themselves feel worthy, and so on.  None of it truly covers our  imperfections, and we find ourselves in a web of frustration that leads to death apart from God, whom we were seeking all along.  The good news is that God has freed us from that desperate end and impossible task by sending his Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the price for our sins.  When we acknowledge that gift and  our need for God’s intervention, we become fully acceptable in God’s eyes and capable of walking a new   life in relationship with him, as we were meant.

 2.   Pray Continually.

Prayer simply means talking to God.  Communication is how we develop any relationship, and it is no different with our relationship to God.  God wants us to come to Him with our needs and desires, because He knows that He is the only one who can truly fulfill them.  Psalm 16:11 says, “In [God’s] presence there is fullness of joy; at [His] right hand are pleasures forevermore.”  Spend time just  talking to God.

 3.   Find a place to worship.

When we find ourselves in a relationship with God, we discover that we are part of a much larger family united by God’s love.  We cannot fully experience God unless we are experiencing that love in  community with His people.  It is our chance to live out Jesus’ command to “love one another as I have loved you” and to share our gifts and abilities with others who will be blessed by what we have to offer.  This is an essential part of our spiritual growth.

 4.   Read daily devotions.

God doesn’t leave us alone to try to guess what he’s like or what he wants of us.  Rather, he speaks directly to us through the Bible.  By reading his word every day, we not only hear from God and build  that relationship, but God exposes us to new insights and truths which bear down on our specific situations and struggles that he longs to help us with.

 5.   Spread God’s word to all people.

Once we experience the joy and liberation of a real relationship with God, how can we keep it to ourselves?  Not only is it the most loving thing to do, but there is great fulfillment in truly helping other people by pointing them to the only one capable of addressing their real needs.
